Globalization has a long maritime history

Modern distributed supply chains are new in form, but the movement of goods, labour competition, and economic dependence across maritime networks have centuries of precedent.

Notes

Globalization did not begin in the recent past. Long-distance exchange has connected much of the world continuously since at least the Renaissance and perhaps earlier. Modern production differs because components may cross several countries before final assembly, but trade-driven arguments over wages, quality, and employment have older precedents. This history explains why advanced economies such as India's depend on protected sea routes and undersea communications.
