The force-structure burden of global presence

A first navy cannot send capital ships everywhere, so benchmark status imposes a continuing requirement for numerous small and medium ships able to sustain worldwide presence.

Notes

Global status creates a fleet-composition obligation as well as a prestige benefit. Even the richest navy cannot use major warships for every distant task. It therefore needs many small vessels to provide mass and presence, plus medium ships capable of showing greater weight where required. Diplomatic reach therefore shapes procurement choices that might not look optimal in a narrower battle-fleet calculation.
