A global power grid trades resilience for reach

Interconnected grids can share generation across distance and time zones, but every additional node and connection also expands the system that must be secured.

Notes

National grids are already decentralised in generation because many power stations feed the same network. More stations provide alternatives when one source fails, but they also create more sites and connections that require protection. Nuclear generation could provide a steady backstop within a mixed system. A genuinely global grid could make solar and wind investment more attractive by allowing producers to sell power wherever demand exists and by balancing daylight across time zones. The same interdependence would create security and reliability problems, so the gain in market reach has to be weighed against the larger shared failure surface.
