Global OPV presence has diplomatic value and hard limits

River-class ships keep Britain engaged around major trade routes, but their light armament limits what that presence can accomplish in a crisis.

Notes

The overseas patrol squadron grew out of the Fishery Protection Squadron and includes River-class ships such as HMS Tamar and HMS Spey. Their Indo-Pacific deployments use the British support facility in Singapore and sustain a presence around important commercial routes. The argument connects that presence with participation in decisions around trade chokepoints. Batch 2 Rivers carry a 30 mm cannon and Batch 1 ships a 20 mm cannon, with machine guns providing additional armament. Small UAVs are a possible addition if funding supports their sustained operation. The ships' patrol role and light armament limit the capability supplied by that presence.
