The global dreadnought race beyond Germany

Britain's technological choices answered several navies, while German rhetoric and diplomacy intensified a separate numerical and political contest.

Notes

The dreadnought era was larger than a two-player Anglo-German technology race. The Royal Navy watched American, Japanese, Italian, and other developments, so many British advances answered several competitors. German construction still mattered because its numbers, public claims, press campaign, and diplomacy created a concentrated challenge close to Britain. Later histories could blame an apparently autonomous naval race for the First World War, even though many navies and substantial political direction shaped the competition.
