Chapter · 32:43-34:33

A wide operational career from Greece to D-Day

The Glen ships became dependable first-generation large landing ships and served across several major theaters and amphibious operations.

Notes

Their value lay in repeatedly delivering troops and landing craft rather than conducting dramatic surface actions. HMS Glengyle, HMS Glenearn, and HMS Glenroy supported operations around Greece, Crete, Syria, the Mediterranean, D-Day, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific. Moving successfully between those theaters required adequate speed, endurance, accommodation, and the ability to operate their landing craft under varied conditions. Their survival through the war and return to the Glen Line in 1946 demonstrate that the basic commercial hulls and conversions were durable. The broad service record is the strongest practical evidence that these first-generation large landing ships were sound designs.
