Giuseppe Garibaldi, national identity, and Obedisco

Garibaldi's campaigns and the ship's motto, Obedisco, open a discussion of national symbols, command judgment, and obedience to intent rather than words alone.

Notes

Garibaldi had an unusually long campaigning career across South America and Europe and played a central role in Italian unification. He organized forces as well as led them, serving in conflicts from the Ragamuffin War and Uruguayan Civil War to the wars of Italian unification and the Franco-Prussian War. His Redshirts supplied a powerful visual and organizational model later imitated by darker mass political movements. The ship's motto, 'Obedisco,' needs a command caveat rather than a reading of simple submission. Garibaldi obeyed when he judged the cause and order right, but otherwise interpreted instructions with a field commander's latitude and exercised independent judgment.
