Heavy guns at Gibraltar and the problem of emplacement

Gibraltar's proposed heavy batteries would need to balance range and elevation against the practical difficulty of placing much heavier guns high on the Rock.

Notes

A 9.2-inch gun position at Gibraltar prompts a proposal for 15-inch or 18-inch coastal guns covering the strait. The heavier weapons would not necessarily occupy the same high positions because moving their weight up the Rock would be difficult. Smaller guns could remain higher while the largest batteries sat lower, relying on their range to cover the approach. The proposed justification for 18-inch land batteries rests on continuing an existing gun type rather than developing a new weapon for treaty-limited warships.
