Gibraltar shows why sea control must be used

The Great Siege of Gibraltar demonstrates that command of the sea is valuable only when it enables supplies, movement, and concrete strategic results.

Notes

Britain could lose dominance in particular theatres and still preserve decisive interests if opponents failed to exploit their openings. Gibraltar depended on the right commanders, matériel, and supply reaching the right place. Britain had used naval mobility similarly in the Seven Years War to strike or secure valuable colonial possessions. The example shifts attention from the abstract possession of sea power to the operational use made of it.
