Disguised raiders stretch British protection worldwide

Merchant-hulled auxiliary cruisers exploit long range and uncertain position to threaten trade where early-war submarines cannot reach and force Britain to disperse escorts globally.

Notes

The conspicuous Deutschland-class ships drew attention while German auxiliary cruisers concealed weapons and military roles inside merchant hulls. Atlantis, Kormoran, Komet, Pinguin, and related raiders had the endurance to threaten trade in regions beyond the reliable reach of early-war submarines. Britain knew where a raider had last struck but not where it would appear next, so protection could not be concentrated only around the latest report. A small number of disguised ships consequently imposed a worldwide demand for cruisers, convoy escorts, fuel, crews, and readiness.
