German protection came with a pursuit problem

German battlecruisers sat nearer the fast-battleship end of the design spectrum, but their lower service speed could allow faster British ships to close the range.

Notes

German battlecruisers traded speed for protection and subdivision, with later ships assessed at roughly 26.5 knots fully loaded and in good condition. Better trial results could reflect lighter fuel and ammunition loads. British ships could close on them, particularly if their crews accepted the risk of turbine damage from pushing the machinery. Dominion Lions would also need more oil support, although they would not be completely oil fired. Oil storage and related infrastructure were already being developed in Australia and New Zealand, making the additional requirement manageable in this assessment.
