German New Guinea falls, then becomes a memoir dispute

Australian forces rapidly occupied German New Guinea, while a later resistance story collapsed under scrutiny from Allied and German witnesses.

Notes

Australian troops occupied Kaiser-Wilhelmsland and nearby German possessions with overwhelming naval and military support. The small resistance led by German officers lacked the strength to halt or reverse the landing. Hermann Detzner later presented himself as a persistent wartime holdout in his 1920 memoir, Four Years Among Cannibals. Allied accounts and German missionaries disputed those claims, and Detzner retracted most of the story in 1932. The dispute shows why heroic memoirs need to be tested against other evidence.
