A hybrid cruiser was worse than a dedicated fast minelayer

The German attempt to combine cruiser combat and minelaying is contrasted with the Royal Navy's dedicated Abdiel fast minelayers and separate light cruisers.

Notes

The offset stern turrets on German light cruisers preserved working space for mines, but the arrangement compromised balance and conventional gunnery. Moving the main guns forward could create a clearer protected minelaying deck aft. The German hybrid contrasts with the British division of labor: Abdiels for very fast minelaying and Towns, Arethusas, and Leanders for cruiser work. A dedicated minelayer could emphasize speed and anti-aircraft defense because surface combat was not its primary purpose. Combining two demanding roles left the German design inferior at both.
