German liner landings need logistics planning

An alternate 1914 question tests whether ocean liners could land troops in France and why people, equipment, ports, and railways are separate problems.

Question

Could Germany use ocean liners to land troops in France in a 1914 alternate-history scenario?

Short answer

Liners might move and unload people quickly, but the hard part would be equipment, supplies, port arrangements, and the wider logistics plan.

Notes

Ocean liners could put troops ashore quickly if they carried suitable davits and boats. Pontoons and walkways could then move men from the boats to land. Heavy equipment and supplies would be much harder to unload and sustain. Any amphibious version of the Schlieffen Plan would therefore need the same advance preparation that Germany devoted to railways and land logistics.
