How damage restrictions helped British destroyers control the fight

Strict preservation orders made German reactions predictable, while British captains needed the cooperation of their entire crews to exploit that constraint.

Notes

Lützow's commander had to reconcile an offensive mission with strict instructions about preserving his ship. These predictable limits gave British destroyers opportunities to force evasive maneuvers through repeated threats. Lützow maneuvered so much that her own accurate shooting suffered. Comparable attacks against Italian battleships could provoke a harder exchange with substantial damage on both sides. British aggressiveness also required commitment throughout each ship's company: an officer or senior rating who undermined confidence could prevent a captain from carrying out his intentions. The O-class ships involved were standard fleet destroyers, making their determined handling a matter of leadership and crew cooperation as well as ship capability.
