What changes if Tirpitz is destroyed while fitting out and never enters service?
Short answerEach German capital ship removed lowers the covering force Britain must maintain and leaves the surviving ships easier to isolate.
NotesBritain had to plan against the worst case of several German capital ships sailing together, even when intelligence made that unlikely. Codes could change and radio discipline could improve, so the Royal Navy could not assume that every sortie would be detected in advance. Removing Bismarck and Tirpitz would reduce both the actual threat and the British force needed to contain it. Scharnhorst would then be easier to isolate and eventually catch without the same German concentration behind her.
