The Restoration depended on the military balance left by the Civil Wars and Commonwealth. George Monck commanded a large, well-trained army in Scotland and marched south when he moved to restore Charles II. Other senior generals joined him along the way, giving the political settlement armed force behind it. Monck later became Duke of Albemarle, a reward that also marks his central place in the transfer of power.
