Why George III was not directing every operation

The small troop detachment points to a constitutional system without an effective directing minister, rather than a king micromanaging every operation.

Notes

Two hundred soldiers under a major were too few for a military occupation. The king was attempting to act through constitutional ministers rather than as an autocrat. The system still needed either a forceful monarch or a prime minister able to coordinate departments, but it had neither. Lord North might have served as an instrument for a commanding sovereign, yet he did not supply independent direction. Fragmented ministerial responsibility left no one coordinating the war as a whole.
