Geography turns policy into ship requirements

Trade dependence, an exclusive economic zone, and exposure to distant shipping crises determine where a navy needs presence.

Notes

Geography is a practical design driver. A large exclusive economic zone needs ships that can appear and enforce authority, while trade-dependent economies have reasons to protect distant sea lanes. Relying entirely on another power for a response leaves a state exposed to that ally's priorities and timetable. Examples from the East and South China Seas, African waters, and the Suez supply-chain disruption show why surveillance without an enforceable presence may be insufficient.
