Geography makes history easier to reason about

Geography matters to historians because placing events in space makes them easier to visualize and understand.

Notes

People often understand complicated events more easily when they can picture them. Historical geography gives that mental picture a location and makes the past easier to reason about. This is why historians spend time debating where events happened, even when the broad narrative is already familiar. The examples that follow use Trafalgar, Hastings, and the Great Fire of London to show how uncertainty about place affects interpretation.
