The French ship of the line Généreux escaped Corfu during the siege and remained in French service until the Royal Navy captured her in 1800 during the Malta convoy action. HMS Leander had followed the reverse path after being captured by Généreux and brought into French possession. Russian forces recovered Leander during the Corfu operation but did not immediately return the ship to Britain. Leander's recovery shows how a coalition partner could hold a recaptured prize before returning it to its original navy. Both ships changed flags as captures moved warships among the French, British, and Russian fleets.
