Carrier escort work with Garibaldi and allied fleets

Deployments with Giuseppe Garibaldi, a multinational Enduring Freedom formation, and USS Nimitz put the class to work as an air-defence escort.

Notes

Durand de la Penne spent much of her career as the air-defence protector of the carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi, and the two ships left service at roughly the same time. Her escort work also extended to allied formations. A recalled Operation Enduring Freedom photograph places her among American, British, French, Italian, and other warships, illustrating the usefulness of her defensive capacity in a multinational fleet. Francesco Mimbelli's work with USS Nimitz in 2013 offers a second example of allied carrier operations. Fleets still try to conceal their positions, reduce radar returns, and operate farther offshore to make detection harder. Once a carrier group is found, an escort's weapons become central to meeting a heavy attack. The deployments show the class carrying out this escort role with Italian and allied carriers.
