Chapter · 45:22-50:10

Gangut rewards Russian concentration after a readiness warning

Russia withdrew from Swedish ships of the line, returned with overwhelming galley strength, and isolated nine coastal vessels after Peter I had criticized fleet maintenance.

Notes

The Russian force initially declined battle when sixteen Swedish ships of the line protected the area. It returned after the heavy ships departed with ninety-eight galleys, committing twenty-three against a Swedish pram, six galleys, and two smaller craft. Peter I had recently inspected the Baltic Fleet, condemned its maintenance, and required a three-to-two advantage in artillery before engaging. Gangut was therefore an important Russian victory built on concentration, patience, and favorable local strength rather than an evenly matched tactical contest.
