Gallipoli's missed strategic consequences

The Gallipoli example links a failed landing to the wider coalition war: Russia remained isolated while Ottoman, Balkan, Egyptian, and Arab calculations stayed unfavorable.

Notes

The excerpt argues that the four-week warning given to the Turkish defenders helped doom the 1915 operation. Gallipoli therefore illustrates how the loss of tactical surprise can produce strategic consequences far beyond the beachhead. Failure prevented the Entente from opening a direct sea route to Russia and from removing the Ottoman Empire from the Central Powers. A successful landing, the book suggests, could also have affected Bulgaria's alignment and removed the threat to Britain's position in Egypt. Arab support and Italy's willingness to join the western Allies also formed part of the wider coalition calculation.
