A ship built only as a cruiser would be a plainly military design, but a large exploration vessel can carry the volume and systems for both scientific work and combat growth. Wartime Galaxy wings resemble battleship divisions or squadrons securing a fleet flank. The designation cruiser therefore describes a broad peacetime role rather than a lack of combat importance. Its scale and wartime weight do not erase the independent, multipurpose cruising mission around which the class is organized.
