Gadfly shows the cost of navalizing a missile

Gadfly gives Sovremenny a task-group air-defense role, with reduced range and possible design changes associated with adapting the system for sea service.

Notes

Gadfly gives Sovremenny fore-and-aft air-defense launchers with two 24-missile magazines. A Kashin serves as the test ship for the naval installation. Its roughly 30-kilometer range is compared with an estimated 45 kilometers for the land version. Sensors and other equipment must withstand salt water; changes to the missile itself are suggested as another possible contributor to the shorter range. Later versions improve, and the system lets a destroyer defend nearby ships as well as itself. Sovremenny's cleaner layout also appears more deliberate than Kashin's crowded arrangement of weapons.
