Survey ships are national and naval force enablers whose value appears in trade, supply, communications, exploration, and military movement. At the time of the 2022 talk, the planned multi-role ocean surveillance ship was intended to combine seabed sensing with remotely operated and autonomous systems for protecting cables and energy infrastructure. The proposal was also presented as a replacement for the specialist diving vessel HMS Challenger, extending the consolidation beyond Scott, Echo, and Enterprise's hydrographic work. A small standard complement could make several hulls affordable to operate while their uncrewed systems distribute the actual search effort. The preferred outcome is a class of several ships with resilient availability, rather than a single hull replacing multiple capabilities.

A future survey fleet for seabed infrastructure
The closing argument favors several crew-efficient ocean-surveillance ships rather than another one-for-many replacement.
