Approaching Fushimi-Momoyama Castle

At Fushimi-Momoyama Castle in Kyoto, the visit begins with the climb and an immediate impression of how the uphill approach itself discourages an attacker.

Notes

The visit begins with two travellers in Kyoto choosing the castle while the rest of their group visits a railway museum. The climb soon becomes the main historical observation: reaching Fushimi-Momoyama is tiring before any fortification comes into view. A joke about choosing somewhere else to conquer captures the deterrent effect of the hill. An attacker would spend energy simply reaching the defended ground. The castle's position makes the terrain part of its defence.
