Why the High Seas Fleet could not instantly sortie after a carrier raid

Steam generation, raid damage, blocked exits, and British withdrawal timing would prevent an immediate full-fleet pursuit after a surprise air attack.

Question

Would the High Seas Fleet sortie while being attacked by aircraft from HMS Furious if the Grand Fleet waited off Heligoland?

Short answer

Probably not as a complete fleet; raising steam, clearing damage, and organizing the sortie would give the British time to recover and withdraw.

Notes

A successful flying-off attack from Furious would not leave the German fleet ready to charge straight after the carriers. Coal-fired boilers require time to light and raise steam, unlike modern gas turbines. Bomb and torpedo damage could disable ships or leave damaged hulls obstructing harbor exits. During that delay, the British would recover aircraft and withdraw under cover of the Grand Fleet. Any German force that sailed quickly would therefore be incomplete and might head toward the Baltic for safety rather than seek battle in the North Sea.
