How remote sensors allow protected combat information centers

Radar and remote sensors remove much of the reason for exposing the officers whose judgment directs a ship in battle.

Notes

Starship automation might allow a vessel to keep fighting after the bridge is lost, but it does not replace the tactical judgment of the experienced officers concentrated there. High bridges on First and Second World War warships made sense when officers depended chiefly on their eyes for information. Radar and other remote viewing systems reduce the need to observe the battle directly from an exposed position. They allow the people directing the fight to work in a combat information center inside the hull. Concentrating Star Trek's senior command team on top of the ship discards that protection.
