After completing his doctorate, the author withheld the thesis while trying to develop it into a book, then encountered repeated publisher refusals. He returned to journal articles and began looking for a different route forward. A long doctoral argument cannot simply be repackaged unchanged for another publishing form. A dissertation, a journal article, and a trade or academic book each demand a different form of argument and presentation.
