Italian cruisers, torpedo boats, and some smaller destroyers had performed well in attack roles. That experience reinforced an interwar destroyer concept built more as a screening lance than a screening shield. The approach could work beside robust cruisers and capital ships. In this assessment, those ships were solid and often exceeded treaty displacement. Convoy protection demanded a more durable escort with a broader equipment fit. The much larger successor may have overcorrected for the earlier destroyers' limitations. The Comandanti Medaglie d'Oro design was intended to correct weaknesses created by cost, infrastructure, and personnel limits.
