Which early guided anti-ship weapon was better, Fritz X or Bat?
Short answerBat, mainly for production and employment practicality; Fritz X was lethal on impact but difficult to guide successfully.
NotesBat receives the preference primarily because more of it could be produced. Both weapons belong to an immature first generation, so neither offers a consistently satisfactory solution. Fritz X demonstrated destructive effect when it hit. Achieving that hit depended heavily on the control aircraft's position and the maneuvers it had to maintain. Its combat record therefore has to be considered alongside the restrictions imposed on the aircraft guiding it.
