Frigates, blockade gaps, and a fog-bound near miss

Detached frigates carried convoy reports while Howe's search pattern and dense fog exposed the limitations of an early wartime blockade.

Notes

Nielly detached frigates to find Villaret and report the grain convoy's position, speed, and escort needs. Howe initially waited in the Bay of Biscay because the convoy eventually had to approach France, then returned to cover Brest when the search failed. Without the later system of close inshore squadrons, Villaret could use fog and the main fleet's absence to leave port. The opposing fleets passed close enough in the fog to hear voices but not to identify one another. The episode shows why scouting vessels, layered blockade positions, weather, and reliable recognition all mattered to operational command.
