Frigates and Jack Crawford keep Duncan visibly in command

Light warships and a sailor restoring Venerable's flags show how the fleet acted to protect both Duncan and the visible continuity of his command.

Notes

Royal Navy frigates were not meant to trade fire inside a close battle between ships of the line, yet Duncan's frigates moved in when Venerable appeared unsupported. Their initiative turned personal loyalty into immediate tactical reinforcement while heavier ships fought their way toward the flagship. When cannon fire shot away Venerable's colors and signal flags, sailor Jack Crawford climbed the mainmast and restored them. Keeping the flags flying prevented nearby ships from mistaking damage for surrender and preserved the visible authority of Duncan's command amid smoke and confusion.
