Chapter · 7:14-9:25

Uncrewed escorts push crewed frigates into cruiser functions

Crewing, coordination and firepower demands are pushing large frigates toward the leadership role once associated with cruisers.

Notes

Uncrewed vessels are expected to take on parts of the escort work previously assigned to frigates and destroyer escorts. The larger crewed ships then supply coordination, leadership and concentrated firepower for those smaller assets. This resembles the cruiser role, including the old frigate duties of reconnaissance, overseas presence and counter-piracy. Increasing expectations make established ship types larger and more expensive until another type fills the space beneath them. Light frigates and uncrewed surface vessels are beginning to fill that smaller-ship role.
