As cruisers grew, torpedo boats and then torpedo-boat destroyers filled gaps in the fleet. The shortened destroyer name survived as the ships developed beyond their first task. Frigate was considered as a name for battlecruisers and later for the Flower-class sloops of the First World War. Those naming possibilities would have produced very different modern associations. The First World War sloops belong to a separate episode from the Flower-class corvettes used in the later account of wartime escort construction.

Cruiser growth created room for smaller combatants, while the frigate name nearly returned for very different ships.
