Singapore's geography shapes its frigates and submarines

The Singapore Strait makes local sea control, submarines and nearby air support central to Singapore's naval requirements.

Notes

Control of the Singapore Strait protects an essential economic interest and gives Singapore influence over the sea lines of communication passing its shores. Formidable-class frigates adapt France's La Fayette design to local requirements, operating with submarines and within reach of land-based aircraft. These conditions reduce the priority assigned to distant independent cruising. Type 218SG Invincible submarines replace older Swedish-derived boats in the force plan, although the precise delivery and order position remains uncertain in the account. A future longer-range surface ship is suggested as a possible development, with destroyer size offering more capability for that different mission. Geography therefore shapes both the existing force and the limits of its likely expansion.
