Chapter · 1:47:18-1:49:29

American frigate requirements include endurance and diplomacy

An ASW leader, a presence ship and a small air-defence destroyer need different design priorities.

Notes

Before choosing a frigate, the US Navy needs to decide which duties the ship must lead. An anti-submarine escort differs from a long-range presence vessel or a smaller air-defence destroyer. Presence work favours fuel efficiency, a small crew and substantial supplies, alongside facilities for diplomatic engagement. Port visits and shared meals help build relationships between the people who conduct international affairs. The expectation that the LCS could answer every requirement complicates the effort to set a realistic mission for its successors.
