How the frigate name became tied to cruising

The frigate's Dutch-linked origins lead into the long-range cruising, scouting, commerce-protection, and presence missions that shaped the type.

Notes

Italian and Dunkirk-linked claims surround the word, but in this interpretation the successful Dutch long-range sailing ship supplied the model for the frigate tradition. Cruising meant patrol and presence. Like a policeman walking a beat, a frigate could build relationships and trust that helped deter trouble, although those effects were difficult to quantify or separate from other causes. The same ship also scouted for fleets, protected friendly convoys, and raided enemy commerce. The name became associated with independent work over long distances.
