The French rear remained largely stationary through the night and even damaged friendly ships with poorly controlled fire. At daylight, other British ships overwhelmed the remaining resistance, while the frigate Artémise was abandoned and destroyed to prevent capture. Rear Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve escaped with Guillaume Tell, Généreux, and two frigates, but his survival depended on remaining outside the decisive action rather than reversing it. Guillaume Tell was captured in March 1800 and became HMS Malta.
