French prisoners try to retake Phoenix and Didon

An attempted recapture aboard the damaged frigates shows why winning a prize did not end the risks of battle or the need for an escort.

Notes

French prisoners tried to seize Phoenix and retake Didon while the damaged frigates were making their return voyage. The British prize crews were already operating two impaired ships with reduced efficiency, giving the prisoners an apparent opportunity. Sailors aboard the frigates contained the attempt before outside intervention became necessary. Even if the prisoners had taken control, the nearby 74-gun HMS Dragon carried marines, sailors, and enough firepower to make escape extremely unlikely. Capturing an enemy warship was only the beginning of the practical work of guarding prisoners, manning the prize, and bringing both vessels safely home.
