Chapter ยท 35:49-37:59

A French nuclear escort as a force multiplier

France's reactor industry, submarine fleet, and single nuclear carrier make one matching high-speed escort especially useful for rapid theatre shifts.

Notes

France begins from an unusually favorable position because it already operates nuclear submarines, a nuclear carrier, a domestic reactor industry, and plans for another nuclear carrier. Unlike the United States, it cannot distribute many carriers among several theatres and rely on one already being near a crisis. Its single available carrier may need to shift rapidly from the Atlantic toward Indian Ocean territories or another distant commitment. A nuclear-powered variant within a conventional destroyer class could guarantee at least one escort capable of sustaining that movement. In this circumstance the escort is less a prestige ship than a force multiplier that makes the carrier's own endurance operationally usable.
