French neutrality and grounded prizes after Gravelines

French coastal guns enforce territorial limits while English and Dutch commanders exploit grounded Spanish ships for prizes and prestige.

Notes

French observers benefited from seeing Spain and England exhaust one another and largely stayed outside the battle. They opened fire only when English vessels came too close to the French coast, enforcing local neutrality without joining Spain's campaign. The next day the grounded San Mateo became a target for Francis Vere and a combined Dutch-English force. Justinus van Nassau and other commanders also secured Spanish ships as prizes. Coalition partners, neutral powers, and independently motivated captains pursued overlapping interests once the Armada's formation broke apart.
