French naval aviation doctrine grew from the demands of empire, alliance, trade protection, and fleet support. Turning those ideas into a working system required suitable carriers and operational experience. Béarn could not deliver the full capability that planners had outlined. The Second World War then gave France little opportunity to develop or demonstrate the planned doctrine in operations.
