A French intervention counterfactual for Spain

Active French naval support might have changed Republican command, Soviet influence, and Spain’s later position in the Second World War.

Notes

This counterfactual asks how French intervention might have changed the Spanish Civil War rather than claiming that it occurred. The French Navy possessed enough strength to counterbalance Nationalist maritime forces but would not act without Britain. Britain was already rebuilding its fleet while balancing commitments against Japan, Italy, and Germany. French participation might also have moderated Soviet influence over Republican naval employment. A pro-French, pro-British Spain could then have altered the western Mediterranean and forced Germany to confront another difficult Iberian campaign during the Second World War.
