Why French intervention in Ireland faced political and supply limits

French troops could reach Ireland, but sustaining them and converting assumed Catholic sympathy into dependable political support were separate and harder problems.

Notes

A French landing in Ireland was possible, but sustaining the intervention would be much harder. France struggled to maintain supply to forces sent across the sea. French planners also risked imagining a more politically united island than actually existed. Even some Catholic lords could prefer British rule to alliance with Republican France, so confessional identity alone did not guarantee the coalition an invasion required.
