Commodore Jean-Joseph Castagnier commanded the expedition's naval force, including the frigates Vengeance and Résistance and the smaller Constance and Vautour. Vengeance later fought USS Constellation during the Quasi-War before entering British service. Résistance also became a Royal Navy prize and was renamed HMS Fishguard. She then captured another French frigate, showing how a captured ship could strengthen the fleet that had taken her.
