Dupuy de Lome shows how packing new technology into an armoured cruiser could obstruct the presence and diplomatic work expected of the type.

Notes

Dupuy de Lome embodied Jeune Ecole ideas about the armoured cruiser. Its designers tried to pack as much technology as possible into the ship. Its structural design nevertheless interfered with the presence, entertaining, and diplomatic duties expected of a cruiser in peacetime. The resulting mismatch between technical ambition and the cruiser's wider role makes it a near example of the Bearn category.
