Chapter · 2:27:00-2:42:30

From Duguay-Trouin to Algérie

French cruisers evolved from lightly protected, fast designs toward the balanced and heavily protected Algérie without abandoning role-based compromises.

Notes

The ships were not simply reactions without a strategy: they reflected changing compromises between two naval philosophies and several theaters. Early eight-inch cruisers remained close to enlarged light cruisers, intended to scout or fight in groups rather than duel alone. La Galissonnière represented a more balanced light cruiser, while Algérie showed how far French machinery and protection could improve within treaty limits. Similar hull forms, funnel arrangements, and restrained batteries across successive classes reveal more continuity than a list of changing class labels suggests.
